We have just celebrated Earth Day all across the world. Earth Day brings out some thoughts about how we can reduce or even eliminate chemicals and other things that harm our environment. We are often surprised to learn that there are some common everyday items we can use around our gardens and landscape to reduce the need for more harmful things like herbicides and pesticides. Here, our Durham landscapers will look at one common item many of us already have in the pantry, vinegar.
Natural Weed Killer
Common household vinegar is an all-around great all natural weed killer. Some plants can be harmed by it so care must be taken to not spray plants you are concerned about. The recipe for killing weeds is:
- One gallon white vinegar
- One cup of salt
- 2 tablespoons of dish soap
Combine all of the above items and mix well. Spray on your weeds and in 2-3 days they will be gone.
Cleaning Planters with Vinegar | Durham Landscapers
Vinegar is also a great way to clean up your clay or terracotta pots before planting. During the growing season, this type of pot will absorb minerals such as calcium and salt which turns them a white color. Soaking these pots in a mixture of white vinegar and water will remove this white stain. The recipe is:
- One cup of White Vinegar
- Four cups of water
- Soak at least 30 minutes for best results
Vinegar is a great ant repellent. The vinegar can deter or kill the ant problem you might be having. Simply fill a spray bottle with ½ vinegar and ½ water. Shake it to mix and spray directly on the ants to kill them. You can then spray around doors and window sill to keep them out of your home. Outside you can spray the outside walls of your home, in your flower beds, and directly on ant hills.
Fruit Fly and Animal Repellant
If you have fruit trees and gardens fruit flies can be a real annoyance. They can destroy your fruit trees and plants. To keep this from happening you can make a fly trap using vinegar. In this case, you will want to use apple cider vinegar. Fill a jar with the apple cider vinegar and add some dish soap. As the flies are attracted to the jar by the scent of the vinegar the dish soap will sink them and they will be trapped in the jar.
White vinegar spayed around the perimeter of your garden will keep out any unwanted animals and pets from the garden. This is a safe but effective way to protect your growing plants. The smell is a big deterrent for any animals.
